I believe one way to help master a scientific discipline is to master its vocabulary. I have created this comprehensive glossary for that reason. Understanding the "language" of any scientific discipline allows students to understand the foundation on which all scientific knowledge for that discipline is built. I use this glossary to help students in my introductory class learn that sociological "language." This glossary was such a success in my introductory class, that I now that I now use it in all of my sociology courses. In addition to being quizzed on chapter material from a textbook, I also quiz my students over 15 to 30 words from the glossary for each chapter module. Students agree that the aforementioned practise leads to a better understanding of sociology on their part and a greater depth of sociological understanding. It is not easy to compile a glossary of sociological terms, concepts, and processes because the discipline is a living discipline unlike some other scientific areas of study. For instance, geologists might discover more components of a rock than previously thought, but the rock is still a rock and has not changed. Sociology on the other hand, by being a living discipline is always evolving-terms, theories, and processes come and go as the discipline adapts to the changing social world. Because of this, this glossary is ever-changing. As this is my first published edition, there will no doubt be a second, third, and further editions-each modified to reflect these changes of the living discipline of sociology.
