"A chemical spill of rubber accelerator occurred in September 1998, on Route 460 near Cedar Bluff, Virginia when a tanker truck overturned. Glycogen (mg/g WW) was measured in mantle tissue of rainbow mussels (Villosa iris) relocated to 1 upstream site and 2 sites downstream of the spill location. Sampling occurred over 4 sample dates. There were no significant differences in the mean glycogen levels of the mussels among sites (p=0.38), indicating that the river reach affected by the toxic spill is now seemingly suitable for the restoration of mussels.
