The approach taken was to ascertain the likelihood of microbes being presentin the disposal trench. Then the extent of general microbial activity wasdiscussed in relation to the environmental conditions thought to exist withinthe disposal trench. Based on the composition of the waste, the biochemicalpathways and end products of probable importance were identified. To encompass a range of outcomes, two scenarios were considered; one in whichtotal containment was assumed, and a second, worst case scenario.
