Investigation Into The Special Programming Needs For An Automated Laboratory For Psychological Research

This report contains a summary of studies evaluating the relative importance to an Automated Psychological Laboratory and feasibility of the following: (1) Development of a statistical package for real-time data analysis to permit modifications of an on-going experiment; (2) Development of a statistical package for conventional data analysis and display; (3) Use of a computer as a teaching machine to prepare subjects for experiments; (4) Use of a computer to train programmers and experimenters; (5) The computer's role in determining tactics within an experiment; (6) Use of a computer to investigate the strategy of experimentation, e, g., simulation of subjects to allow exploration of experimental designs; (7) Advantages and disadvantages involved in the use of the various programming languages, e.g., Decal, Macro, Frap, Algol, Fortran, Cobol, and specially written languages; (8) Techniques for automatically discovering interesting relations in data.
