Excerpt from Master Plan, Raven Rock State Park The rock formation was originally named Patterson's Rock in the seventeen forties after its alleged discoverer, Gilbert Patterson. Patterson, a farmer from Buies Creek, was returning from a hunting expedition in the Deep River area in Lee County when his canoe capsized, and was washed ashore. With one leg broken, he managed to crawl to a shelter at the point now called Raven Rock. For more than a hundred years thereafter the area was known as Patterson's Rock. It was not until 1854, when the Cape Fear and Deep River Navigation Company began building locks and dams on the Deep River, that Patterson's Rock became known as Raven Rock.
