Osi Model For Library Applications

The document has three main sections: a technical presentation of the OSI protocols for general use; an analysis of the conditions of application of OSI to libraries; a presentation of the standards relevant to electronic documents and data formats. The presentation of the OSI protocols covers: the intermediate layers (Transport, Session, Presentation); the application layer (MHS-Message Handling System, FTAM-File Transfer Access and Management, Virtual Terminal, Directory Services). The analysis of the conditions of application of OSI to libraries includes: the presentation of the library specific standards for the application layer which are being elaborated by ISO (ILL-Interlibrary Loan, SR-Search and Retrieve); an analysis of the possibilities of using application layer protocols in the libraries field. The chapter on electronic documents and data formats covers ODA, SGML, and EDI.
