Excerpt from Pennsylvania State Horticultural Association News, Vol. 16: March, 1939 Fruit growers and friends, it gives me great pleasure to greet you at this, our 80th meeting of the Pennsylvania State Horticultural Association, notwithstanding the fact that I am soon to turn over my duties to a successor whom you as association members will select at this meeting. My term in office has been a pleasure, an honor you be stowed upon me and a means of placing me in closer contact with an industry that is of vital importance to all of us.' Many of us have in mind the growing of a crop and its ulti mate marketing but as individuals the state, national or uni versal problems are contacted only when attending meetings of this nature. It is not my intention to attempt to make a speech, let alone an address. I hope that you will grant me the privilege of making an informal but brief talk. Your secretary has made up a program which should be of value in attacking the perplexing problems of the fruit grower and it is not my desire to utilize time that might be used to ad vantage in the discussion of interesting topics. During the past two years efforts have been made to con sider the fruit growers' welfare wherever possible. Favor able cooperation has been received from the Pennsylvania State College, the State Department of Agriculture, agencies which endeavor to serve the fruit grower when called upon to do so. As previously stated, I sincerely appreciate the honor you have bestowed upon me, the splendid cooperation received from officers and I sincerely h0pe that my successor will be extended your never-failing support and cooperation.
