"Archaeological evidence for prehistoric anadromous fish use along the Middle Snake River has been characterized as providing time-depth to the ethnographic pattern of winter occupations using stored fish. Within the context of recent ideas concerning hunter-gatherer mobility, the ethnographic pattern is best outlined in a logistically organized collector model. Such a pattern would lead to the formation of a variety of detectable site types, including residential bases, field camps, locations, and caches. However, multivariate analysis of the physical locations of sites and, indeed, current excavation data fail to demonstrate all of these site types, and as a result, prehistoric populations seem to be more easily characterized as foragers, who "map on" to resources. These conclusions hold implications for evolutionary questions in the study area."-- Abstract, page v.
