One may, and perhaps even must, agree with the rhymer that his design was a mistake, and that the subject ought to be continued in prose, without on that account being willing to let the verse altogether die. It stands to reason that young Lowell could not have written two thousand lines or so of verse without falling upon felicities worthy of preservation, however mis taken the design may have been or, for that matter, however irrelevant and obscuring the very beauties may have been to the design. The thing is worth rescue and reprint, and I com mend it to you. As to the random felicities, take this one for an example.
