Sallie Stockard (1869-1963), the first female graduate of the University of North Carolina, published three county histories between 1900 and 1904. Thereafter, she lived an obscure and difficult life that reveals much about the many challenges women of that time faced. Encouraged by New South educational mentors, she countered restrictions on women with diligence and self-promotion.
