The end of the 19th and the early 20th century were a rich time for postcard publishing. Hundreds of millions of designs were issued, and billions sent through the million. Almost every subject was explored, holidays - of course - being a favorite occasion on which to mail a card, and Christmas prime among those holidays. The primacy of the postcard meshed neatly with the growth of Christmas, as we know it, as a holiday both in the U.S. and U.K. Santa Claus, Father Christmas, or St. Nick, was naturally a favorite subject for postcard artists.
