Excerpt from The British Critic, Quarterly Theological Review, and Ecclesiastical Record, Vol. 13: January, 1833 It is not forgotten by us, that we inflicted on the public a some what unmerciful extent of disquisition, in our remarks on the first of Dr. N area's three gigantic tomes; and we do grievously ap prehend that gods, and men, and columns, may be thrown into resentful commotion by a repetition of the experiment. We therefore commence our task with a virtuous resolution to resist; as much as possible, the excursive propensity. The events and the periods, indeed, which Dr. N area has undertaken to illustrate, are full of temptation. There must be a strange apathy in the mind which does not feel itself seduced to take its pastime in that vast ocean of historical inquiry.
