The name ?Free Lance Christian? was coined by my wife to appease other questioning individuals about our lack of membership in some manner of religious organization. It seems as though our identity as Christians was supposed to include an affiliation to some sort of church. The term free lance originally referred to a mercenary soldier or military adventurer of the Middle Ages, often of knightly rank, who offered his services to whomever he chose. Also spelled freelance, it has become more popular as the term used for a self-employed person hired to do specific assignments as in a ?freelance journalist?. Therefore, ?The Free Lance Christian? is not intended to promote any religious or church (organizational/denominational) ideology. Actually it attempts to describe the opposite. It is a term that is intended to promote the idea that an individual can have a relationship with God through Jesus the Christ without being under the headship or ascribe to the formulas (doctrines) of any man-made religiously oriented entity.
