A boy having been sent to the vicar to come to baptize a parcel of children, he inquired how many there were; the boy answered, three when he came; but God knows how many there may be before you get there. The county of Kent included in this volume is shorn of that part which is now included in London. This is a matter of convenience rather than of history. By this means we get the whole of London' together in one volume, and readers will readily forgive, a part of Kentish history being incorporated in that of the capital of the empire. Each paper is printed exactly as it stands in the original, so as to preserve the form as well as substance of the descriptions given, and references to illustrations are retained. A list of the papers omitted is given at the end of each county, as well as a table of references to other volumes of the series which contain descriptions of county antiquities. However much it may be desired, it is not possible to add notes in illustration or extension of the text.
