Thirty-two home schools in Central Kentucky were surveyed to determine the purpose and justification of the home school, home school activities, and evaluation of student progress in the home school, and the role of the public school system with the home school. It was found that the homeschoolers in Central Kentucky do have a philosophical preference for the conservative, Christian fundamentalist home schooling movement. Home school activities, evaluation of student progress, and the role of the public school system with the home school varied according to the home school philosophy. The conservative, Christian fundamentalist homeschoolers preferred activities of a structured and basic nature; whereas, the liberal, anti-establishment homeschoolers preferred open-ended activities involving critical thinking and socialization. Although the homeschoolers were quite different in many aspects, they both provided equal exposure for their children to non-homeschoolers and they both felt that the public school environment was harmful for their child.
