In view of this situation it is offered without misgiving or apology. It is generally conceded that we have fallen upon evil days as regards the popular knowledge and use of the Bible. In many respects our greatest book is as much lost to the people as in the days preceding the discovery of the "book of the law" in the reign of Josiah. The most serious element in this painful situation is that it is really without excuse.
