Excerpt from United States Census of Business, 1948, Vol. 4: Wholesale Trade, General Statistics, Commodity Line Sales Statistics; Size of Business, Operating Expenses, Credit, Class of Customer, Legal Form of Organization, Trucks, and Miscellaneous Subjects The advice of trade associations, individual businessmen, research and marketing organizations, and Government agencies was invaluable in determining the feasibility of collecting various types of data and the methods for minimizing the burden of reporting, as well as in determining the types of information which would be of greatest val'ue.' Because of budgetary and other limitations, it was not possible to collect all of the data recommended by these groups. Timely publicity given to the Business Census by business organizations, trade papers, local newspapers, and radio stations aided greatly ln informing businessmen of the nature and objectives of the census and facilitated the collection of census reports. The primary responsibility for the 1948 Census of Business was centered in the Business Division of the Census Bureau. Other divisions of the Bureau, particularly the Field Division and the Machine Tabulation Division, also had important functions in the census.
