Annotation Black women operated in two sites of resistance for community empowerment, says Tate (political science, Rutgers U.). One was slavery, where women laid the foundation of a culture of resistance that empowered the slave community to survive and resist slavery. The other was free black women in the industrialized northeast, who stimulated the black movement's emphasis on community cohesiveness, organizational development, and political agitation.
