A beautiful and endangered animalThe cheetah is the world's fastest land animal on the planet, clocking a top speed of 70mph. This book is inspired by seeing cheetahs on a three-week trip to Africa. One lateafternoon in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in southwest Kenya, our guide spotted the"cheetah brothers." One was tearing into a young zebra brought down by the other cheetah,who was worn out from the chase and resting. After that first sighting, we saw themsleeping, in a "food coma," digesting their prey. Cheetahs hunt only every two to threedays. The following morning, the cheetah brothers were on the prowl for a new meal. Aswe were watching them, they were staring intensly at a cape buffalo, but realized it was toofar to chase. Cheetahs can keep up their speed for only three minutes. They are Africa'smost endangered big cat-only 7,100 are estimated to live in the wild.
