Daphne Comes To Town

Again, drawing on real life stories from Sticky’s family, Daphne Comes to Town is the third book in the Sticky the Kitty series. In our third installment, the ever-growing family - now consisting of our wise old timers, JoJo and Stewie, and our two rescued youngsters, Sticky and Sadie – meet, Daphne. After taking Sadie to ‘dog school’, Mom and Dad return from the shelter with Sadie and a new box with holes cut in the top. Is it treats? Was it goodies?! The family can’t wait to find out! That is until the box hisses at them. What kind of treat hisses? As the family creeps closer, a white paw pokes through one of the holes and takes a swipe at Sticky. This was surely no treat. Just then Daphne pops her perfectly shaped head up and stares right into Sticky’s eyes. Having been raised by dogs and being sure he is a dog himself, Sticky has never seen such a beautiful dog and asks if this dog is a boy dog or a girl dog? “Excuse me?” This new ‘dog’ exclaims. “ I am a cat. YOU are a cat. And those over there are dogs.” After explaining her name is Daphne and that she was adopted ‘by mistake’, Daphne spends the next several days sulking in her box. No matter how many times Sticky asks her to play, all Daphne wants is to return to the ‘pet hotel’ where her family left her. Surely they would be back soon for her and would be missing her. Realizing what has happened, JoJo explains to the rest of the gang that Daphne’s family has put her up for adoption and it would take some time for her to understand this. “You can’t hurry sad”, JoJo explains. Patience is the name of the game as the family waits for Daphne to join them. Finally, after many days of lying in her box, Daphne asks Sticky if they can just sit together. Showing Daphne his favorite spot on top of the couch, looking out of the big window, Sticky listens as he learns Daphne misses her old family but doesn’t want to be sad anymore. “Well, you can’t hurry sad” Sticky tells her. As the story ends, Daphne is still trying to convince an unwavering Sticky that he isn’t a dog and learning to be part of her new family. Some days the gang would play all day. And some days they would just sit quietly with Daphne, looking out the big window, letting her sad go away. Every day was different, but every day got a little better. Sticky and the gang learn that you can’t hurry sad. Sad ends when sad is done being sad. But it will end. Sometimes the best thing we can do for a sad friend, is to just sit with them in silence, and let the sad go away.
