Herein a region of unemployment, underemployment, and low per-capita incomesawmilling is one of the few existing industries. The extensive forest resource favors this industry. Yet in the past decade the number of sawmills operating in this region has steadily decreased. Concerned over this situation, the U.S. Forest Service has undertakes studies to determine what might be done to stabilize the sawmill industry by increasing its efficiency in producing and marketing its products.
