Excerpt from The California Teachers' Quarterly; Sept., 1907: Containing the Third Installment of the Proceedings of the Fortieth Annual Meeting of the California Teachers' Association, Held at Fresno, December 26, 27, 28, 29, 1906 Grand Court, some definite plan for introducing schools for drawing or instruction in drawing, free to all men, women and children, in all towns of the commonwealth of more than 5000 inhabitants. The legislature replied by making drawing a required study in' all the schools of the state. It was put in to serve the needs of industrial life. New school masters soon made it a merely culture study and the very people who had asked for it began to look upon it as a fad. Some years afterward manual train ing was introduced with exactly the same result. The over mastering of influences of school traditions have brought into subjection both the drawing and the manual work, is the report of the Massachusetts Industrial Commission.
