The first colony of Scottish Highlanders was the Argyll Colony in the Cape Fear valley who settled in 1739 near the current city of Fayetteville. By the start of the American Revolution, the estimated number of Scot Highlanders in North Carolina was 15,000. Angus was the son of Hugh McDonald who settled in southern Moore County, North Carolina in 1787. Hugh was the son of James McDonald who came to America with his family from the Isle of Skye in 1770 or 1771. This book traces the descendants of Angus McDonald down through several generations. Also included are the Breland, Carter, Clark, Cooley, Davis, Dearman, Dunnam, Evans, Freeman, Garraway, Herring, Hinton, Ivey, Johnson, Jones, Jordan, Lee, Lott, Martin, McGilvary, McNeill, McQueen, McSwain, Miller, Palmer, Parker, Patterson, Pipkins, Prine, Smith, Turner, Walley, Watford, Williams, and Young families. Many other families are included through marriages.
